The Nitty-gritty of Rodents

Roof Rats and House Mice: Sneaky Desert Invaders

Rodents in Phoenix, particularly Roof Rats and House Mice, can be a big problem for homeowners, especially in places like Scottsdale. These critters are notorious for chewing through wiring, insulation, and food supplies, and they can easily turn your attic or walls into their own personal hangout spot.

Behavior and Habitat

  • Roof Rats: These rats are excellent climbers and often enter homes through the roof. They love to set up nests in attics, garages, and even inside walls. You’ll also find them in trees and shrubs, particularly citrus trees.

  • House Mice: Mice are small but mighty when it comes to causing problems. They can fit through tiny openings and are often found in kitchens, basements, and storage areas.

Both of these rodents are particularly drawn to areas where food and water are readily available, making Scottsdale neighborhoods with lush landscaping or homes near golf course ponds and waterways prime spots for infestation.

Why Rodents Are a Problem

  • Damage to Property: Rodents chew through just about anything, including electrical wiring, which can create a fire hazard. They also gnaw on wood, insulation, and stored items.

  • Health Risks: Rats and mice carry diseases such as hantavirus, leptospirosis, and salmonella. Their droppings and urine can contaminate food and surfaces, posing health risks to you and your family.

  • Rapid Reproduction: A single pair of rats or mice can multiply quickly. Within a matter of months, you could be dealing with a full-blown infestation if left unchecked.

Prevention and Exclusion Tips

Here’s how you can keep those pesky rodents out of your home:

  1. Seal Entry Points: Mice can squeeze through holes as small as a dime, and roof rats can slip through roof gaps. Be sure to seal any cracks or gaps around doors, windows, and your roofline.

  2. Trim Vegetation: Keep trees and shrubs trimmed away from your home, especially citrus trees, which attract roof rats.

  3. Secure Food Sources: Store food in airtight containers, and be sure to clean up food scraps and crumbs promptly.

  4. Remove Nesting Materials: Clear away clutter like cardboard, paper, and fabric, as rodents love to use these for nesting.

Season of Peak Activity

Rodents are most active during the fall and winter months (October to February) when they seek warmth and shelter from the colder desert nights. They’re drawn to homes during these cooler months, making them a common problem during this time.

Most Prevalent Areas in Greater Phoenix

  • Scottsdale and Arcadia: Areas with citrus trees and lush vegetation are prime real estate for roof rats.

  • Neighborhoods near golf courses or waterways: Homes located near bodies of water, like golf course ponds, are more susceptible to rodent activity, especially where there’s easy access to food and water.

Great company! Took the time to walk through the house with us and explain possible target areas and including the backyard. Told us about the pets and how long to keep them away from the areas. Even made suggestions on how to control the gnats with our house plants! Couldn’t recommend them enough!

Train Station is top notch! We just moved to the desert here in Arizona and we found a scorpion in our home. This is all so new to us. Jason came out to look at our home and helped us identify all of the areas we should be concerned about and how important it is to have a regular pest service. We decided to sign up right away. He meticulously took care of the outside of the home and yard and helped us determine what to do inside as well. We were concerned about our small child and our pets but Jason knew what to do. His knowledge and professionalism made us feel reassured and comfortable. If you are new to the desert and looking for help with scorpions Jason is the best.
