The Nitty-gritty on Scorpions

Meet the Arizona Bark Scorpion: A Sneaky Desert Critter

Scorpions are part of life in the Sonoran Desert, and the most notorious of them all is the Arizona Bark Scorpion. These critters are common around Phoenix and surrounding areas, known for their venomous sting and their knack for finding cozy spots in and around your home.

Behavior and Habitat

Scorpions are nocturnal creatures, meaning they hide during the day and come out to hunt at night. They thrive in cool, dark places like under rocks, in cracks, and unfortunately, inside homes. You’re likely to find them in:

  • Yard debris (like piles of wood or rocks)
  • Cracks in walls
  • Underneath furniture
  • Inside shoes or clothes left on the floor

Scorpions enter homes looking for water and food, which mostly means insects like crickets and cockroaches. They’re surprisingly good climbers, which is why they sometimes end up on walls or even ceilings.

Why Scorpions Are a Problem

  • Venomous Sting: The Arizona Bark Scorpion is the most dangerous scorpion in the U.S. Its sting can cause severe pain, swelling, numbness, and in rare cases, more serious symptoms. Young children, the elderly, and pets are particularly vulnerable to their stings.

  • Rapid Reproduction: Scorpions reproduce quickly, and a single scorpion can have dozens of offspring. If you’ve seen one, there could be more lurking.

  • Hiding Spots: These critters are masters of hiding, making it tough to spot them before it’s too late.

Prevention and Exclusion Tips

While scorpions are resilient, there are steps you can take to keep them away from your home:

  1. Seal Cracks and Gaps: Make sure windows, doors, and the foundation are sealed up tight. Even small gaps can be entry points.

  2. Clear Yard Debris: Keep firewood, rocks, and yard waste away from your home. These provide perfect hiding spots for scorpions.

  3. Install Weatherstripping: Adding weatherstripping to doors and windows can help prevent scorpions from sneaking inside.

  4. Turn Off Outdoor Lights: Outdoor lighting attracts bugs, which in turn, attracts scorpions. Turn off unnecessary lights at night or switch to yellow bulbs.

  5. Use Scorpion Traps: Sticky traps placed around your home can help catch scorpions.

Professional Treatment Options

If scorpions have already settled in, it’s time to call in the cavalry. Here at TRAIN STATION PEST ELIMINATION, we offer specialized scorpion control services:

  1. Scorpion Barrier Treatments: Our technicians apply treatments around your home’s perimeter to create a barrier that keeps scorpions out.

  2. Blacklight Scorpion Hunts: Using blacklights, our team can locate and remove scorpions hiding on your property.

  3. Ongoing Monitoring and Maintenance: Regular treatments help keep scorpions at bay, ensuring your home stays scorpion-free.

Scorpion Myth Buster: No House is Immune

Even with modern home designs and newer construction, no house in Phoenix is immune to scorpions. They can squeeze through tiny cracks and crevices, so whether your home is new or old, you need to stay vigilant.

At TRAIN STATION PEST ELIMINATION, we know scorpions like the back of our hand. Our experienced techs are trained to handle these tricky critters and we use top-notch products to ensure they don’t come back.

Great company! Took the time to walk through the house with us and explain possible target areas and including the backyard. Told us about the pets and how long to keep them away from the areas. Even made suggestions on how to control the gnats with our house plants! Couldn’t recommend them enough!

Train Station is top notch! We just moved to the desert here in Arizona and we found a scorpion in our home. This is all so new to us. Jason came out to look at our home and helped us identify all of the areas we should be concerned about and how important it is to have a regular pest service. We decided to sign up right away. He meticulously took care of the outside of the home and yard and helped us determine what to do inside as well. We were concerned about our small child and our pets but Jason knew what to do. His knowledge and professionalism made us feel reassured and comfortable. If you are new to the desert and looking for help with scorpions Jason is the best.
