Howdy, neighbors —

As October draws to a close and the desert air cools down just right, we wanna wish y’all a Happy Halloween from Train Station Pest Elimination.

Whether you’re out wranglin’ candy with the kids, carvin’ pumpkins on the patio, or enjoyin’ a quiet evening watchin’ the neighborhood light up, we hope your night’s full of laughter, safety, and good ol’ Arizona fun.

đŸ‘» Trick-or-Treatin’ Then and Now

Phoenix Halloween nights sure have changed since the early 1900s. Back then, folks gathered for community costume parties and parlor games downtown. Adult costumes leaned fancy — think kings, queens, and mythical characters — and partygoers recited ghost stories by lamplight instead of LED. One 1919 invitation read:

“Put on a mask and talk so queer,
The witches won’t know you

And don’t you wear anything new,
For that is the hour the ‘bad’ witches play.”

We reckon that was a polite way of sayin’: don’t wear your Sunday best — it, and you might not make it home untouched since mischief was part of the fun back then. Tossin’ flour, ringin’ bells, and playin’ harmless pranks was all the rage before store bought costumes and candy took center stage like today.

Fast-forward a hundred years, and Phoenix neighborhoods have swapped ghostly rhymes for Trunk-or-Treats, block parties, and backyard movie nights under the stars. The look’s changed, but the heart’s the same: good neighbors, good laughs, and community spirit under our big desert sky.

Here’s to sweet treats, safe streets, and peaceful nights under the desert moon.

Trunk or Treat Halloween celebration gains popularity in North Phoenix townhome garages. Backs of SUV's, pickups, car trunks, even entire garages are decorated for Halloween trick or treaters.

đŸŒ” Fun Fact, Did Ya Know?

This year, analysts say Halloween decoration sales are outpacing Christmas for the first time ever. Folks are goin’ all-in on light shows, 12-foot skeletons, and pumpkin inflatables. Maybe it’s because everyone already owns plenty of Christmas dĂ©cor — or maybe it’s just that Halloween lets us get creative without the pressure.

And here’s a local twist: because Arizona doesn’t observe Daylight Saving Time, our sunsets line up due west on Halloween week, castin’ a straight shot of orange light down Phoenix’s long streets — just in time for the trick-or-treaters. No witchcraft there, partner, just desert geometry doin’ its thing.
