🐾 Holiday Treats That Attract Ants but Can Harm Your Pup

When the holidays roll ‘round, we all love to treat our furry sidekicks — but did ya know some of those festive goodies can bring in more than cheer? Ants, roaches, and even rodents can sniff out crumbs faster than a hound dog on a steak trail. And worse, a few of those sweets can make your dog or puppy  downright sick.

🎁 Holiday Sweets that Lure Pests (and Risk Pet Health)

Chocolate, especially dark or baking chocolate: irresistible to ants and deadly to dogs. Even a small bite can cause tummy trouble or worse.

Candy canes and cookies: sugar galore — pests love it, and xylitol (found in some sugar-free treats) is toxic to pets.

Fruitcakes & nut mixes: sticky sugars draw ants, while raisins and macadamia nuts can harm dogs.

Leftovers on the counter: from gravy bowls to pie crumbs, all smell like an open buffet to roaches and mice.

TSPE Tip: Keep pet treats in airtight containers and store human goodies high off the ground — pests and pets can’t raid what they can’t reach.

🐶 Safe Seasonal Treats for Your Furry Friends

If you want to spoil your sidekick, try:

    • Frozen dog treats made from plain yogurt, pumpkin, or peanut butter (no sugar or xylitol).
    • A lick of pure pumpkin puree — great for digestion and doesn’t tempt pests.
    • Crunchy veggies like carrots or green beans.
    • Homemade dog biscuits — for your dog and his best play mates!

Your pets stay happy, and your kitchen stays pest-free — that’s a win-win, cowboy style.

🧹 Preventing Pest Mischief Around Pet Areas

  • Wash food and water bowls daily. Ants love leftover crumbs and drips.
  • Keep pet bedding clean. Fleas and mites love warmth and neglect.
  • Seal pet food bins tight. Once those ants catch wind of kibble, they’ll form a line straighter than a cavalry march.

If you’re seein’ trails of ants near food bowls or droppings near storage bins, it’s time to call in your local pros.

💬 Fun Fact, Did Ya Know?

The modern canals winding through Phoenix aren’t just pretty scenery — they’re echoes of one of the most remarkable engineering feats in ancient North America. Between A.D. 800 and 1450, the Hohokam people built a vast network of irrigation canals across the Salt River Valley, carving out a desert paradise long before air conditioning or running water existed.

Phoenix Area Aqueduct system mapped along ancient paths to bring water to the Phoenix valley.

These channels stretched for hundreds of miles, guiding river water to crops of corn, beans, squash, and cotton. The Hohokam used stone and wooden tools, yet their designs were so precise that modern engineers later mapped new canals right along those same ancient paths.
